Koreyeng - A Journey of Self-Discovery from Jozi to Matibidi

Nico Phooko. The Music Painter | Johannesburg | South Africa

The mixed media collage is about a self-discovery journey of any living being who happens to have been born in an environment that does not fully embrace his or her cultural, traditional, religious, and spiritual wellbeing. A multicultural space where nations are highly integrated and cultures are blended. It’s about a person born and bred in an urban setting and is aware through history and stories on how their origin is or was like other the life they live within a legacy of a metropolitan situation. The one who cares to travel back to the place of their ancestors’ birth to learn and observe first-hand how in modern times the people who still live in those rural areas are faring and surviving on daily basis and how they still practice some of the measures ancient civilizations undertook for thousands of years. We turn to be too foreign from ourselves, who we genuinely are, and from our ancestral way of life due to the comforts and indulgences, urban life has sanctified us with to somehow overlook the importance of imparting the knowledge, skills, and exceptional qualities our descents bequeathed us with to our children, future generations and the world at large.
