Vermont Black
Demetrius | Middlebury | USA
Living in Vermont I don't meet a lot of other blacks folks. It's draining. A certain part of me is missing and only comes to visit every once in a while. I say visit because meeting and being around other black people is always a scheduled affair. The serendipity of running into another black person is rare. Bakanal de Afrique gave me the opportunity to be around a group of blacks folks and let me explore and define a side of me that I've only started to understand. I have this curiosity about the black experience because I don’t think I did it very well growing up. Based on the way I look I don’t necessarily have to worry about getting stopped on the street. It's made me want to show the range and variety of the black experience in Vermont, and that despite living in a white community in Vermont, we can still thrive.
