Actor Nor Dey Die, is a convergence of online archival footage depicting common-place experiences of Nigerians mostly in Lagos, the country’s economic capital.
The 9:51mins video is an ode to the famous Lagos yellow bus, the danfo, the city’s most widely-recognised form of public transport. The video seeks to highlight the conditions created by the government for people living within certain class demographics, using public transport as a mirror for the daily life experiences of the masses.
Using Fela Kuti's song ‘Shuffering and Shmiling’, Actor Nor Dey Die takes the viewer into the relationship between the masses and various governments over the years. It highlights survival amidst bad governance and the beauty and joy within it all.
Those in the danfo ecosystem repeatedly reckon with successive governments initiating reforms and regulations that seem to not consider the very people who would be affected by their decisions. Haven't we repeated this failed system for too long?
In Nigeria it is said that one must be self-reliant and independent of government in order to make it to the next day. Actor Nor Dey Die is the story of the people and their resilience to survive against all odds.
