4 SEATLESS

Vivi Karia | Nairobi | Kenya

THE PROCESS

While there are many forms of transport in Nairobi. Matatus are the main and most convenient form of transport as they are affordable and accessible from any area in the city. As much as they are praised for the modern and youthful culture they bring to the city. I like to think that matatus are more than that. As they move through the city to its outskirts picking up and dropping people from various walks of life (rich or poor, man or woman, young or old). The matatu experience brings together by offering no form of classism or gender biasness through time, fares and most importantly comfort.

As a sculptural artist who designs everyday objects with a focus on the chair. I begin to deconstruct the idea of sitting and the object chair and how it is similar for every passenger despite their class or gender.

Therefore, I will make four different designs of a chair. The four different designs conceptually represent the different economical classes and gender types in Nairobi. The four chair designs will also have no seat area to represent the lack of privilege for any specific individual boarding the matatu.
